The Mindset Before You Serve in Squash

In squash, the serve sets the tone. It’s the only moment you have full control—no pressure, no reaction—just intention. Yet too many players rush it, missing the mental opportunity it offers.
Before you serve, pause. Take a breath. Ask yourself: What am I trying to achieve? Are you creating time, applying pressure, or targeting a weakness? The mindset before the serve should be calm, focused, and strategic. Visualize the outcome you want and commit to it fully.
This moment of stillness isn’t about perfection—it’s about clarity. A rushed or distracted serve invites chaos. A purposeful serve creates control.
And just as important is what comes next. Your movement after the serve must be automatic and assertive. Don’t admire your shot. Move. Recover to the T. Be ready. Your mindset should already be one step ahead—anticipating returns, staying balanced, and preparing for the rally to unfold.
Whether it’s a lob, a body serve, or something tight to the side wall, the serve is not a throwaway shot. It’s your first statement. Get your mind right before you hit it, and you’ll start the point with confidence, clarity, and the upper hand.
