The importance of evaluating your “Why” in squash...

In a sport psychology setting, when talking about an athletes “whys” we are simply looking at their purpose playing their sport. When an athlete steps back to think about why they play their sport it helps put their hopes and goals into perspective and can restart a love and dedication that may be fading due to recent poor performances and or a lack of improvement.

When evaluating your whys try to avoid being shallow (I play because I like it). The only way to truly push through an obstacle and or continue on a path of success is to dig deep and evaluate intrinsically (I play squash because it challenges me to be physically and mentally strong).

Bringing attention to your current purpose in squash is great for practicing self-awareness and can help with setting proper short and long term goals for your squash game.

A good way to get started is to keep a training log handy and report progress after practices and matches no matter the result.

If you are evaluating your whys and realizing some aspects no longer align for you it may be a sign to ask for help.

A sport psychology consultant can help athletes recognize their whys and aid in paving a road to continued success.
