Tiger Reportage - Philly JCT

Writer's picture: Paul FrankPaul Frank

Philadelphia hosted the fourth JCT of the season this past MLK long weekend.  Over a dozen of our Tiger crew qualified for the elite event, five making quarter finals and Yidrew our star performer in 3rd place in the BU15.  Check out the Tiger photo dump on our Facebook page to get a feel for the weekend!

For those unfamiliar with JCT’s they are explained by US Squash as the “highest level of junior tournament, which attracts the best players from around the entire country. US Squash accredits 5 JCT tournaments each year and each event is played over the course of three full days.”  Long story short, the best 32 players from each age group get together and test each other out roughly once a month in season… it doesn’t get more fun than that!

As mentioned, headliner of the event from a Tiger perspective was Yidrew in the BU15, who made his first ever quarter final, then his first ever semi final and his first ever medal in a JCT… all in a row!

Brother and sister duo Colten and Reghan both made their first quarter finals of the season in their respective U19 divisions.  15 y.o. Reghan, fresh from a top ten finish in the British Junior Open, stormed to a solid quarter final, losing out to the eventual winner in a tight four game encounter.  Big brother Colten made his first quarter final in the BU19 and acquitted himself well throughout.  Also in a down year, Colten won though to a 5th place finish and will be looking forward to the remainder of the season.

Mimi GU13 and Eric BU17 also played exceptionally well, winning through to 6th places!  Eric enjoyed his best ever finish in a JCT, and defeated Tiger teammate Shrikar in a great second round.  Shrikar on his behalf had an impressive 0.14 first round rating upset!

Shout outs to Lily on her top 10 finish, Yiden, Claire and Madeleine on their top 16 and Evan on his first BU13 JCT start!  Best wishes from all the coaches to Parth and Shrikar who were both forced to withdraw from the event following injury and similarly sending our thoughts to Alex who was unable to compete due to illness.  Bigger things ahead for all three!

From our soon to open Philadelphia Club - shout out to Coach Laurent who coached his son Jack to victory in the BU19!  Fresh from a successful run through the British Junior Open where Jack made a semi-final, losing to the eventual winner, Jack played masterful squash and won the final in a crisp 3/0.  More to come…

The next JCT takes us to Texas, and before that we have a proverbial tonne of school squash!  This coming weekend we have our next Rehearsal Tournament at the club and despite the cold weather, warm training at the usual times each and every single day.

A great weekend just done, and many more memories to be made this season - see you all at training!
