The Underrated Weapon: Why the Serve Matters in Squash

In squash, the serve isn’t just a formality—it’s your first chance to take control of the rally.

Too often, players treat the serve as a routine shot. But at Squash Tigers, we emphasize its importance constantly. Why? Because a smart, intentional serve can immediately tilt the point in your favor. It’s not just about getting the ball in—it’s about setting up the next shot and getting in front by the time the third ball is struck.

That’s the real objective: dominate the serve-serve return-third shot sequence. If you’re in front after shot three, you’re in charge.

Our players learn to mix it up—high lobs, tight side-wall serves, fast-paced body serves—because variety disrupts rhythm and creates weak returns. It forces the opponent to guess, adjust, and often hit from uncomfortable positions.

Returners? Your job is just as tactical: neutralize the advantage and buy time. Hit early, hit deep, and don’t let the server get in front.

This serve-and-return philosophy is a constant theme in the Squash Tigers curriculum. We practice it. We talk about it. We build drills around it. Because controlling the start of the rally often means controlling the point.

So next time you’re on court, remember: don’t serve to start the rally—serve to take control of it.
