Coach’s Corner: Why You Should Always Tie and Untie Your Squash Shoes Properly

Let me say it straight: if you’re cramming your foot into your squash shoe without untying it — or yanking it off with the heel of the other foot — you’re slowly wrecking your shoes... and maybe your feet, too.
I get it. You’re in a rush. Training just ended and you’re tired. But here’s why it matters:
1. Protect Your Shoes
Squash shoes are designed to support your foot — if they’re worn properly. Forcing your foot in or out without untying loosens the heel structure, stretches the upper, and breaks down the shoe faster. That means less support, more sliding inside the shoe, and a shorter lifespan. These things aren’t cheap — treat them right.
2. Protect Your Feet
When you rush putting your shoes on or off, you're often twisting or crushing parts of your foot without realizing it. Over time, that can lead to soreness, blisters, or even injuries. A secure, evenly-tied shoe helps prevent rolled ankles and improves balance and movement.
3. Build Good Habits
The best players take pride in the little things. Being disciplined with your gear shows you’re serious about your sport. Tying and untying your shoes properly is part of your preparation and your recovery.
Take the extra 30 seconds. Your shoes will last longer. Your feet will thank you. And your game will be better for it.
